Rotary speech contest participants posing at the Bavarian Inn

Eleven Jefferson High School students recently put their public speaking skills to the test at the Rotary Club of Shepherdstown's Four-Way Speech Contest, held on February 18 at the Bavarian Inn. This annual event challenges students to explore ethical decision-making through a 5-7 minute speech based on the Rotary's Four-Way Test:

  • Is it the truth?

  • Is it fair to all concerned?

  • Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

  • Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

The students delivered thoughtful and well-prepared speeches, showcasing their ability to apply ethical reasoning to important issues. Luke Viands took first place and will advance to the regional contest in March, with the chance to compete for a $2,000 scholarship at the district level. Ronan Bartosevich placed second, and Miranda Hall took third.

Each of these seniors brings a unique perspective to the competition. Luke is passionate about theater and plans to study it in college. Ronan, who plays lacrosse, plans to serve in the military before continuing his education. Miranda serves as president of Jefferson High’s student government and will join the U.S. Navy after graduation.

Beyond the competition, students enjoyed breakfast and support from local Rotary Club members, who commended them for their thoughtful speeches and strong presentation skills.

JHS English teacher Jennifer Glymph played a key role in encouraging students to participate, and the Rotary Club expressed appreciation for her continued support of the event.

Congratulations to all the participants for their hard work and preparation!
