On Friday, September 19, Jefferson County Schools celebrated the official dedication and open house of the new Ranson Institute of Secondary Education (RISE). The facility houses the MedEd and EmComm programs, the Martin Robison Delany Opportunity Learning Center (OLC), the Lally House Post-Secondary Transition Program, and Jefferson County Adult Education together in one space. With these programs now working in tandem, RISE creates new opportunities for JCS students and lifelong learners in our community.
The celebration began with a dedication ceremony at 1 p.m. After opening remarks from Ian Hillman, Director of Responsive Education, the Washington High School Vocal Ensemble performed the National Anthem, followed by a moving rendition of “My Home Among the Hills.”
Guest speakers included Dr. Chuck Bishop, Superintendent of Jefferson County Schools; John Holmes, Regional Adult Education Director; and Edwina Benites, Jefferson County Administrator. Each highlighted how the new RISE facility will strengthen educational opportunities in the county. Their remarks were followed by the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the facility’s opening to the community.
"We take great pride in meeting the needs of all of our students, and the repurposing of this building is an example of that commitment," said Dr. Bishop. "We're proud to have breathed new life into a structure that will continue to serve our students and this community. RISE stands as a testament to the power of community, collaboration, and commitment to excellence in education."
The program also featured a powerful solo performance of “Rise Up” by Ava Chicchirichi of the WHS vocal ensemble. Following the ribbon-cutting, guests toured the new facility to learn how each program serves JCS students and learners of all ages. Throughout the event, guests enjoyed refreshments from the WHS Patriot Pastries, a new baking and pastry class within the Hospitality and Tourism cluster of the JCS Career and Technical Education program.
"I'm proud of this project because it shows what can be accomplished when we work together for the success of students, staff, and the community," said Hillman. "It truly demonstrates that together, we rise."
Thank you to our JCS community and business partners for making the RISE opening a success and a special day for everyone involved.
