The Shepherdstown Rotary Club was proud to host this year’s 4-Way Test Speech Contest featuring outstanding students from Jefferson High School.
All of the participants are seniors at Jefferson High School, with the exception of Isla Bartosevich, who is a junior.
Each student delivered a thoughtful speech applying Rotary’s 4-Way Test to real-world issues.
William Gibbs spoke about computer scientists developing artificial intelligence and the importance of incorporating ethics education into their training.
Sean Viteri addressed the fairness of college entrance requirements, sharing examples of students who felt pressured into attending colleges simply because they applied.
Ava White explored the impact of fast fashion and its hidden pitfalls.
Aidan Cunningham delivered a passionate call to preserve democracy through civic participation—volunteering, staying informed, getting involved, and voting.
Isla Bartosevich gave an uplifting message about improving our diets by cooking fresh meals, sharing food with friends, and encouraging one another without judgment. She shared that her brother—last year’s second-place winner—encouraged her to participate.
Delanie Graham, Miss West Virginia’s Teen 2025, inspired the audience with a powerful message encouraging young women to pursue their dreams in any field they choose.
What stood out just as much as the speeches themselves was the way these students supported one another. They listened intently, applauded generously, and demonstrated real respect for each other’s presentations. The judges had an exceptionally difficult task—every speech was strong, thoughtful, and well delivered. In many ways, they were all winners.
We are grateful to Mrs. Jennifer Glymph, a consistently positive and encouraging educator, for preparing these students so well.
Our thanks also go to the three Rotary members who served as judges. They received the contest rules two weeks in advance, studied them carefully, and came well prepared for what is never an easy task. We also appreciate our member who served as timekeeper to ensure fairness for all contestants.
